Adaptation of William Blake’s Poem

For my adaptation of the poem I have decided to do an animation. I want this adaptation to centre on the wind because I think this is a prominent theme in the poem.

The animation will be set around a tree positioned in the middle of the screen with leaves on the branches and ground around it. The colours used in the animation will be rich, strong summer colours, such as green leaves and bright blue sky. There will be sounds of birds tweeting to show a calm, relaxed atmosphere. The first frames will centre on a light breeze sweeping in and rustling the leaves slightly. The scene will then focus on a boy and a girl smiling at one another to the left of the tree, which shows the ignorance of love. The wind will them begin to pick up to show the boy confessing his love to show the transition between the unknown love and the boy expressing his love. The boy will be on one knee in front of the girl to show he is expressing his feelings.

The colours begin to fade and give a blacker feel to the scene to emphasise the trembling the boy feels once his love is expressed. There will be a loud howling wind sound and the wind then creates a whirlwind and tosses all the leaves in the air and swirls them around the screen to show that the characters worlds have been turned upside down. The animation then focuses on the woman departing from the scene. Leaving the man on the edge of the screen.

In the distance a man fades into the edge of the scene as if coming slowly. The next screen shows the man becoming stronger, less faded and the other man, who is on the opposite edge of the screen after confessing his love, fading out slowly. The leaves begin to settle as the wind calms.

The final scene shows the woman lying amongst the leaves and the two men on either side of the screen. The man who confessed his love is faded, almost invisible and the man who entered later on in the animation is prominent. The last scene shows a single leaf float across the screen and settle on the woman, it then floats up slightly and rests on the woman again to represent the ‘sigh’.

This type of adaptation is a fidelity approach because it tries to faithfully render the poem into an animation.

This is my interpretation of the poem:

One should never express their love because it cannot last. When love is untold it is calm and gentle and obviously invisible and silent as the recipient is unaware of the others true feelings.

Once love is told, entirely it completely disrupts things and turns things upside down. Confessing your feelings is daunting and I think this refers to the, ‘trembling cold in ghastly fears’ because once love is confessed it is frightening to wait to hear their reply, scared of rejection. And the girl leaves.

The last stanza I found the hardest to interpret because I think there could be so many different meanings. For example, the traveller could be a woman that came by and ended up with the man, second best which would explain the ‘sigh’.

But the interpretaton I think to be most accurate is that she fell in love with another man. The lines, “silently, invisilbly’ I think refers to love, you cannot help who you fall in love with, it is intangible. The last line confused me because it seemed that the traveller was unhappy to take her. However, I think that perhaps the ‘sigh’ showed how simple it was for him to have her. This could be due to requited love. However, when reading this poem I got the impression that the pair could not be together and therefore their love for each other should stay silent and invisible, (like the wind) because if it was seen there would be trouble. In the poem he confesses his feelings and this results in the girl running away through fear of others finding out their feelings and thus she marrys someone else.

However, this is a very romantic, soppy and standard take on this poem. A darker interpretation of the end of this poem could be that she departs and stumbles across a dark/unknown character, which would explain the ‘traveller’ and eventually gets taken (ie. Kidnapped/killed/raped) by him. This would be a more exciting and shocking interpretation and would probably give a better ending for an adaptation.

This is because of the music I have used which is the theme tune to MacDonalds adverts. I would also be prosecuted because of the brand name, Rice Krispies I have shown in the video.

The Guardian article argues that gaming does not encourage children to behave violently. However, the source the article uses is biased as it is the creator of one of the most popular games in the world, ‘The Sims’ and ‘Sim City’. The blog , while only showed one side of the argument, supported its views with statistics which I felt made the article less biased which surprised me. I originally thought The Guardian would be les biased and would include more statistics than the blog as it is a broad sheet newspaper which is generally respected and thought of as giving honest, fair news. These quotes from the articles sum up their conflicting views well. “Video games do no harm to children…” Guardian. While in contrast, “…kids are too exposed to violence on TV, film and especially video games.” The language used in both articles was difficult to compare as, The Guardian uses many quotes from Will Wright, the gaming creator who uses slang words. Whereas the blog uses more forml language than I had expected. Both articles mention shooting that happened in America and whereas the blog talks in sympathy towards it, The Guardian touches lightly on it and speaks in more matter of fact manner. This highlights the difference between a traditional media source and a non traditional media source. The blog allows the user to add more emotion and heart felt opinions, whereas, The Guardian should provide a more factual account of events or views.

I wanted to make something which included photographs, because I think they show a lot about a person. I also used key words to describe me, they are to the point and obvious. I also used pink as the background as this is my favorite colour. The Media space where members of the public can participate in political debate is ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show’. This show is a talk show where members of the public can contribute advice and opinions on other members of the public’s problems and lives. The public can do this by applying to be in the audience of the show and thus be able to offer their thoughts on each case. Many members of the public enjoy offering their help to others and feel empowered through this. However, many other members may feel that the show exploits people’s problems and issues and that it should not be shown on television as entertainment. Although there are members of the show’s team who work with the contestants to help solve their problems and give them the help and advice they need.

The way I think ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show’ influences decisions is by affecting the contestants on the show. Hopefully after the debate has taken place on the issues in their lives, the contestant will make sensible decisions on how to improve their situation. However, this is a television programme made for entertainment and to extent of help that the contestants receive is debatable.

‘The Jeremy Kyle Show’ does not involve as much public debate as some other shows, as it is many all about Jeremy Kyle, however, I feel it does show differences of public opinions and debates between audience members and the contestants as well as the man himself. I was disappointed by the website as it has no forums for users to have debates and discuss issues which have arisen in the shows. This would improve the opportunity for participating in political debate. However, all in all the audiences participate in the show and give their advice and help to the contestants who sometimes argue back and other times take the advice.

Now i’ve chosen my idea i’ve started designing my website. I’ve made the logo so far, using flash, and this week i’m concentrating on building the site. I’m worried I won’t remember it all, especially as I seem to have forgotten some simple stuff we learnt about CSS last year. I’m going to read through the tutorials I kept from last year and hope for the best. But matt said he’ll do a refresher session on monday if he has time.
